BeginnerYarn: Worsted (Size 4)Hook: 3.5mm (E-4)Time: 2-3 hours3 min read

This little owl is worked as one piece from the bottom up, with two simple wing shapes sewn on at the end. It's a great confidence-building project if you've already made one or two amigurumi basics and want something with a bit more shaping.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in your main body color (about 40g)
  • Small amounts of contrast yarn for the belly and wings
  • 3.5mm crochet hook
  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • Two 8mm safety eyes
  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations

  • MR โ€” magic ring
  • sc โ€” single crochet
  • inc โ€” increase
  • dec โ€” invisible decrease
  • st(s) โ€” stitch(es)

Body

Worked bottom-up in a continuous spiral.

  1. MR, 6 sc in ring (6)
  2. inc around (12)
  3. (1 sc, inc) around (18)
  4. (2 sc, inc) around (24)
  5. (3 sc, inc) around (30) 6โ€“14. sc around, no increase (30) โ€” 9 rounds

Switch to contrast color for the belly panel on rounds 8โ€“13, working only the front third of stitches back and forth in rows if you want a defined belly patch, or simply changing color for full rounds for a simpler striped look.

  1. (3 sc, dec) around (24)
  2. (2 sc, dec) around (18)

Attach safety eyes between rounds 9โ€“10, spaced about 8 stitches apart, close to the top for a wide-eyed look.

  1. (1 sc, dec) around (12)
  2. dec around (6)

Stuff firmly before closing. Fasten off, weave tail through remaining stitches, and cinch closed.

Wings (make 2)

  1. MR, 6 sc in ring (6)
  2. inc around (12)
  3. sc around (12)
  4. (1 sc, inc) around (18) 5โ€“6. sc around (18)

Flatten the wing and sew the opening closed, then sew to the side of the body angled slightly backward.

Ears / Tufts (make 2)

Chain 6, sc in 2nd chain from hook and across, fasten off leaving a tail for sewing. Sew two small triangular tufts to the top of the head.

Beak

Chain 4, join in a ring, sc twice around, fasten off. Sew a small triangle of contrast yarn between the eyes.

Finishing

Embroider small feather details on the belly with a contrast thread if desired. Weave in all ends and fluff the yarn gently.

Tip: safety eyes placed close together and high on the head give this owl a much more "surprised" and endearing expression โ€” try a few placements before gluing or locking them in.
