Crochet Trick-or-Treat Bag Pattern (Easy Halloween Bag)

A sturdy, roomy bag for collecting Halloween candy, worked in a dense single crochet fabric with a simple applied pumpkin motif for seasonal flair.

Materials

• Black or dark purple worsted weight cotton yarn (about 150g)
• Small amounts of orange and green yarn for the pumpkin motif
• 4.5mm crochet hook
• Yarn needle

• ch — chain
• sc — single crochet
• inc — increase
• st(s) — stitch(es)

Base

Chain 20.

Round 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across, 3 sc in last ch, continue sc down the other side, 2 sc in first st to close. (40 sc)

Round 2: inc in first and last st of each short end, sc around. (44)

Rounds 3-4: sc around, increasing slightly at the rounded ends to keep the base flat. (approx. 48)

Body

Rounds 5-20: sc around in each stitch with no increases, working in a continuous spiral. This builds the bag to about 10-11 inches tall.

Fasten off at the top opening.

Pumpkin Motif

With orange yarn, MR, work 6 sc in ring, inc around, (1 sc, inc) around to about 18-24 sts depending on desired motif size, then fasten off and flatten into a circle. Add a small green stem shape and 2-3 surface-stitched vertical lines to suggest pumpkin ridges. Sew the finished motif to the front center of the bag.

Handle

Chain a length for your desired handle size (typically 30-35 sts).

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across.

Row 2: ch 1, sc across for a sturdier strap.

Fasten off, leaving tails. Sew both ends to the inside top edge of the bag on opposite sides.

Finishing

Weave in all ends. Work 1 round of sc around the top opening if desired for a clean, reinforced edge.

Tip: work the base and lower third of the bag with an extra strand of yarn held together for reinforcement — trick-or-treat bags take a lot of stress from a full night of candy collecting.
