Crochet Christmas Gnome Pattern (Easy Amigurumi Gnome)

This classic faceless gnome is a holiday decorating staple — no embroidery skills needed since the long beard covers the face entirely. A cheerful, quick project for the season.

Materials

• Red or green worsted weight yarn for the hat (about 25g)
• Cream or white yarn for the beard (about 25g)
• Skin-tone or peach yarn for the small visible nose (small amount)
• Neutral yarn (tan or grey) for the body, if not using fabric
• 4.0mm crochet hook
• Fiberfill stuffing
• Yarn needle

Body

Worked bottom-up in a continuous spiral, in your body/robe color.

Begin stuffing as you go, adding more toward the top.

Fasten off, leaving a tail. Weave through remaining stitches and cinch closed — this becomes the top of the head, where the hat will attach.

Nose

With skin-tone yarn:

Lightly stuff and fasten off leaving a tail. Sew to the center-front of the body, about a third of the way down from the top.

Hat

Worked as a tall cone, in your chosen hat color.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. The hat should be tall enough to droop slightly forward or to the side when placed on the body — this is the classic gnome silhouette.

Beard

With cream or white yarn, cut strands approximately 10-15 cm long. Using a latch hook or simply folding each strand in half and pulling through with a crochet hook, attach strands densely across the lower two-thirds of the front of the body, just below and around the nose, working from the sides inward so the beard fully covers where a face would be.

Trim the beard to your desired length and shape — straight across for a tidy look, or a slight point for a more classic gnome beard.

Assembly

Sew the hat to the top of the head, allowing it to flop slightly to one side or forward. Adjust the beard as needed to ensure full face coverage.

Finishing

Weave in all ends. Optionally add a small pom-pom to the tip of the hat, or a thin belt around the middle of the body for extra detail.

Tip: gnomes look best in odd-numbered groupings — make three in a slightly different hat color each for a natural-looking shelf display.
