This beanie uses the front-post/back-post double crochet combination to create a ribbed texture that hugs the head without a separate brim piece. It's one of the fastest satisfying makes in crochet.

Materials

  • 1 skein bulky weight yarn (approx. 100g / 150m)
  • 6.5mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker

Sizing

This pattern fits an average adult head (22"โ€“23" circumference). To size down, chain fewer stitches in multiples of 2; to size up, add more.

Pattern

Chain 46 (or adjust to your gauge/size โ€” must be an even number), join with slip stitch, careful not to twist.

Round 1: Ch 2 (does not count as st), dc around (46 dc).

Rounds 2โ€“10 (Ribbing): Ch 2, FPdc around next st, BPdc around next st, repeat around. This creates the ribbed look. Continue for about 6 inches of height.

Decrease rounds (crown shaping):

Round 11: dc in next 4 sts, dec โ€” repeat around. Round 12: dc around, no decrease. Round 13: dc in next 3 sts, dec โ€” repeat around. Round 14: dc in next 2 sts, dec โ€” repeat around. Round 15: dc in next st, dec โ€” repeat around. Round 16: dec around.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Thread through remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Add a pom-pom to the top if desired, or leave it clean for a minimalist look.

Tip: bulky yarn hides tension mistakes really well, which makes this a forgiving practice pattern for front-post/back-post stitches.
